Andamooka Progress and Opal Miners’ Association chairperson Peter Allen made a surprise announcement at the APOMA annual general meeting on Sunday.
Airplanes ferrying workers into the region were due to fly in that very day!
After the meeting Mr Allen got a message indicating that the day's trial flight had been postponed.
It seems that a fly in fly out operation in and out of Wudinna and the region is a distinct possibility in the near future.
"Wudinna Council have helped us out with $2,500 towards our air strip, they have been funded by the State Government to look at ways they can (entice) their young workers to stay living in the Wudinna region and fly in to work at Olympic Dam," Mr Allen said.
"They looked at flying into Olympic Dam direct but there was some problem with single engine airplanes.
"We have already had two pilots from Wudinna fly into the Andamooka strip and check it out (and) today we have a bloke coming over from Roxby to have another look."
The flights will be operated by Opal Air.
"For the workers it means avoiding a seven and a half hour road journey, it’s not just the time they lose," Mr Allen said.
"It is not a safe road at times, there are kangaroos all over the road.
"Andamooka needs a working airstrip, we have done the work, now we need to use it," Mr Allen said.
There has been one proposal from a Coober Pedy based tourist operation who is proposing an all day flyover taking in Sovereign Hill, Leigh Creek, Lake Torrens and Maree with a lunch stop at Andamooka.
