Association elects new committee

22/08/2008 4:27:00 PM
Andamooka Progress and Opal Miners’ Association elected its association committee and executive on Sunday.

In a meeting in the community hall attended by more than 40 members, nominations were tabled for positions on the association committee.

Conrad Powell took over the chair during the election process.

Peter Allen was re-elected chairperson on a show of hands and Andamooka Primary School principal Angela Turner joined the committee.

New resident Claudia Mitchell was also nominated and elected.

Bill Addington was nominated during the meeting and was elected to the committee on a show of hands.

Stefan Bilka spoke in thanks of the work of retiring committee secretary Jean Lawrie.

"It's Jean we have to thank for sourcing the funding for the community bus and there was so much more,” he said.

“She has worked tirelessly for APOMA over a number of years," Stefan said.

"Thank you Jean from the whole community of Andamooka."

Rob Hancock was nominated to take over Jean's role as public officer for the association.

The meeting went on to a quick discussion over the fate of the Athol Pines at the old cottages.

Several people spoke of the noxious nature of these trees and the way they have been associated with asthma.

The meeting resolved to pull out the trees at the cottages and create shade with sails as new trees grow.

"Unfortunately young trees can't grow underneath these pines, they throw too much salt about," Allen (Staffy) Heath said.

The meeting also spoke of the good work being done around the town by part-time town maintenance man Greg Franklin.

"Greg has made a real difference around the town already," Peter Allen said.

He was backed up by comments from the floor.

A question was asked about the opal festival and its sub-committee.

"It is this committee you see in front of you that will manage the APOMA component of the Andamooka Opal Festival," Mr Allen said.

"The Opal Hotel are doing the Oktopalfest on the Sunday, and we are designing a program that complements that."

Andamooka Emergency Services is planning a costume ball on October 4, the Saturday night of the Opal Festival.

Committee member Rob Hancock spoke of the need for APOMA to respond decisively to the Environmental Impact Statement due for release later this year.

"When that time comes we will have a town meeting and discuss the EIS and what it might mean for Andamooka's governance," Mr Allen said.
