Clean up week launched

29/08/2008 12:01:00 PM
Keep Australia Beautiful Week kicks off on Monday.

Keep Australia Beautiful Week is held in the last week of August each year to coincide with spring and reminds people of the simple things they can do at home, work or school to benefit their local environment.

Local environmental activist Steve Moss is using Keep Australia Beautiful Week to urge Roxby Downs residents to turn out on September 28 for our own clean-up.

"We are affiliated with Clean up Australia and Clean up the World, we do two big clean-ups a year,” he said.

“We participate in the Australia wide clean up day in March and we do another clean up in September, ”Steve said.

Chair of the environment forum, Sophie Torrisi has been praised for her involvement.

"Sophie is fantastic," Steve said.

"She has a group that turns out four times in the year, they look after the section of Olympic Way just the other side of BP," Steve said.

"Sophie and I had similar reactions when we came to Roxby, we saw the signs proclaiming Roxby to be a tidy town,"

Roxby Downs has been honoured with the KESAB tidy town award in past years.

"But when we came to look closely at the town and saw the litter, it didn't fit with the tidy town image," Steve said.

"If you go out and have a close look at the town after one of our clean-ups you can really see the difference it makes," Steve said.

Despite the hot weather 86 people turned out in March to clean-up.

“It was a great volunteer effort and a credit to the spirit of the community,” Steve said.

“I'm pushing for the ton, I would love to see 100 people turn out on September 28," Steve said.

The organisers are taking a flexible approach and people can nominate the park or area they want to clean-up.

Interested persons can come to Lions Park to register with Clean Up Australia and then go to their nominated place and clean-up.

“We are seeing a gradual shift in people's attitudes to re-cycling and the environment here in Roxby," Steve said.

Support for the clean-up initiative has grown from 36 people the first year to nearly 100 now.

"I look out the window and I can see a gutload of rubbish right here,” Steve said.

“I live here and I see it everyday, I don't know what people driving into Roxby Downs from the airport for the first time must get - I shudder to think what their first impressions are," Steve said.

So keep the morning of September 28 free for the Clean Up Roxby campaign, even if its just for a half an hour or so it all helps," Steve said.

In the meantime all South Australians are being urged to 'score points for the environment' to help tackle climate change and protect our natural resources.

You can get involved at home, at work or at school by logging on to www.keepaustraliabeautiful.org.au and participating in the 100-point challenge.
