The program for Andamooka's October long weekend was confirmed last week when the Andamooka Progress and Opal Miners Association announced new details for the event.
"The weekend kicks off with the APOMA welcome barbecue on Friday night," association chairperson Peter Allen said.
The welcome barbecue will be held at the Old Cottages historical precinct.
The cottages have been given a face-lift by the association’s volunteers in preparation for the event.
Later on Friday evening there will be the final heats for the Opal Hotel's Outback Karaoke Idol competition.
Outback Karaoke Idol will build over four weeks starting on September 5.
"We are looking to attract performers from all over the region," Opal Hotel manager Carl Church said.
The association is taking responsibility for planning Saturday's fun events Mr Allen said.
"On Saturday we having lots of family activities and we are looking for volunteers to manage elements of the program,” he said.
“We are looking at a soap box derby, the Jim Shaw wheelbarrow race and perhaps a music event for young people.”
Mr Allen is hoping the artists of Andamooka will turn out as the weekend is a small community celebration.
On Saturday night the Andamooka Emergency Services costume ball will be held in the community hall.
This is being produced by a dedicated group of volunteers and will feature live music.
On Sunday the focus shifts to the Opal Hotel's Oktopalfest.
There will be plenty of competitions and prizes including the keg rolling, keg tossing and the strong arm challenge.
"All our events have categories for both men and women,” Carl said.
“It's a great family day, we have lots of things for the kids.
“We will have a minor miner race, a dirt shifting race and a traditional tug of war between Mobil and the Opal Hotel.
"We are hoping that local service organisations will see Oktopalfest as a way of raising funds, we are very ready to talk about opportunities for fund raising within the context of Oktopalfest," Carl said.
The highlight of Oktopalfest on the Sunday will be the final of the Outback Karaoke Idol competition, which will result in the crowning of Outback Idol 08
There will also be fireworks and rock and roll band The Lady Killers.
"We still have a couple of events sponsorship packages available to businesses who would like to be involved,” Carl said.
In you want to be involved in Outback Karaoke Idol you just turn up on the night of the heat.
There will be a heat at Roxby Downs Community Club on Friday, September 5.
On the same night and for every other Friday night in September there is a heat at Andamooka's Opal Hotel.
Kids compete as equals in this competition and there will be categories of winners - best singer, best performance and people's choice.
"We want people to put themselves out there and have a great time," Carl said.
"Its is going to be a pretty busy weekend."
The full program for the long weekend will be published soon.
