Karla launches exhibition

22/08/2008 4:31:00 PM
Roxby Downs artist Karla Branch launched a collection of work for her exhibition on Sunday night August 17.

She unveiled glass jewellery pieces and paintings with found materials like fabrics and printed paper wound into them.

"I love using recycled materials," Karla said.

She also uses words in her work.

One piece uses recycled playing cards in a series that features words she had written for an estranged friend.

"I use old letters, old newspapers, anything I can to get the effect I am looking for," Karla said.

Karla's early work was in stained glass.

"I have lots of stained glass at home but I stopped working with it.

“I found the lead fumes were making me ill," Karla said.

Her glasswork is now crafted at the end of a hot head torch.

Karla and her husband Travis and their son Quinn come from New Brunswick in the Eastern part of Canada.

"We really love this little gallery, we have been watching it and it seems to have a busy program,” Travis said.

“There are new things coming through all the time, it’s very exciting," Travis said.

Karla is quite open about her influences.

"When I came to Roxby Downs I had some time to research online and I found some interesting artists like Kelly Rae Roberts, I took some inspiration from her, “ she said.

“There is a little bit of Modigaliani in what I do, I came up with this series that features faces.

“I especially like the work I did just recently in preparation for this show," Karla said.

You can see Karla's work at the Precinct Gallery inside the Leisure Centre until September 4.
