Police welcomed

South Australia Police is a step closer to providing the Roxby Downs and Andamooka communities respectively with a safer living environment after the appointment of new police officers to both stations.

Andamooka residents are over the moon with the appointment of an officer, Andamooka and Opal Miners Association chairman Peter Allen said.

This breaks an 11-month absence an officer in the mining community after Sergeant Nigel "Digger" Campbell left the position last year.

"There had been an increase in crime originally," Mr Allen said.

"Everybody has been waiting for one (a police officer) to come and keep an eye on things like hoon driving."

The association has sought adequate accommodation for the officer with paper work now finalised.

The officer is expected in the community within the month but no transfer date has been set, a SAPOL spokesperson said.

The officer will be transferring from within the northern operations area to the opal mining community.

Roxby Downs Police Station had also benefited and has gained Sergeant Stuart Paxton, who joined the station last week.

Sergeant Paxton comes to Roxby from a two-year posting at Leigh Creek and is an asset to the station with 35 years’ experience under his belt.

Along with wife Carmel, Sergeant Paxton is looking forward to joining the Roxby community, he said.

"I'm very aware that it will be a lot busier here (in Roxby Downs), we have just had a very busy weekend," Sergeant Paxton said.

"I am looking forward to the challenges ahead.”

Sergeant Paxton is happy to be in Roxby and was surprised by the amount of people he already knew in the community.

"I've already run into a few people I know," he said.

The sergeant has learned a thing or two from his years of experience in the force and hopes to implement a few positive changes in the town.

Along with reestablishing the popular Blue Light discos, Sergeant Paxton hopes to enforce a "zero tolerance policy on violence", working closely with other officers at the station to provide a safe community for residents.

"My direction to the team will be to arrest any offenders resorting to violence," he said.

He said there were issues surrounding alcohol and domestic violence, and the police would look towards liquor-licensed business to help control violence.

"We will also be looking closely at all existing licensing arrangements to make sure they comply with the law," he said.

Mr Allen said that both communities would benefit from increased police presence, and that he expected that petty crime in the opal mining community would drop when the new officer arrived.
